2021 Winter Institute

PVYO is proud to offer our new PVYO Mid-Winter Online Music Institute* to supplement the ensemble instruction students are receiving in PVYO, school, or in other orchestras and bands.  Classes are designed to provide engaging study and training, allowing students to explore the many facets of musical expression and creativity. This is a great way to investigate different topics in music that can benefit the growing individual and musician.    Students may enroll in multiple sessions.  Each Session is $100.00.  (Registration Deadline – January 7, 2021)

Chamber Music - Brass Intensive

Instructor : Terry Alvey

Curriculum: 

In this workshop, PVYO Wind Ensemble Director,  member of the M Street Brass Quintet. and Trumpet player, Terry Alvey, introduces and leads brass students through some of the great Brass Chamber Music Literature.  Students will learn and reinforce good brass fundamentals including, warm-ups and technical study, with a strong emphasis on listening and analyzing specific Brass chamber music. As an ensemble we will also prepare a chamber music work and present a performance online. This is a wonderful way to work with an accomplished brass teacher, learn new repertoire, and enhance your skills.

Hidden Melodies - Women & Minority Composers

Curriculum:

This 4-week course will focus on the lives and music of outstanding composers who have been sometimes unjustly ignored in the world of classical music.  Women, Black, Hispanic, and Asian composers have contributed to music alongside the more famous names we are all familiar with. Each week, we will feature composers of each of these groups.

Thursday Evening Classes

Bucket Drumming

Instructor : Jon Eising

  • Time: 5:00 – 6:00 p.m.
Curriculum: 

In this workshop, PVYO Concert Band Director and Blake High School Percussion Teacher Jon Eising leads students through one of the most entertaining and attention-grabbing percussion genres: bucket drumming. This highly interactive program presents many types of rhythms, percussion techniques, and engages students in the expansive and inspiring experience of bucket drumming and playing percussion.

This workshop will be geared towards students who have limited or no previous percussion background. Fundamental percussion basics, practice habits and music reading skills will be stressed. Required materials will include some form of drumsticks (which can be as basic as 2 wooden dowels) and some type of bucket. The 5-gallon buckets sold at most hardware stores are recommended but not required.

Testimonials from student musicians whose primary instrument differs from percussion state that rhythm reading, coordination, confidence, and hand/finger dexterity were greatly improved after study in drumming.

Violin/Viola Bow Arm Workshop

Instructor : Dr. Mark Schuppener

Curriculum:

In this workshop, PVYO Preparatory Orchestra Director, Dr. Mark Schuppener, leads students through an intensive workshop focused on developing expressive, relaxed, and efficient bow arm technique.  This workshop is specially designed to address the needs in bow technique and bow arm development we see in many string students coming through the PVYO program.  This is a great way to learn and develop your technique in a fun, encouraging, and productive online environment.

Electronic Music Production

Instructor: Michelle Roberts
  • Date: Thursdays: 1/14, 1/21, 1/28, 2/4
  • Time: 7:00 – 8:00 p.m.
Curriculum:

Taught by PVYO Symphony Co-Conductor and Montgomery Blair HS Music Technology Teacher, Michelle Roberts, this course will teach students the techniques and principles of electronic music production that they will apply to their own compositions. Geared toward MS/HS students.

Topics may include:

  • Recording and Sequencing
  • Creating Loops and Patterns
  • Remixing, Arranging, and Composing
  • Setting Up an In-Home Studio

**Students must have access to the browser-based Digital Audio Workstation Soundtrap.  This is available for free, but it is recommended that students use the Music Makers Premium version.  This is available for a free 30-day trial!
