2021 Summer Institute

PVYO is proud to offer online summer classes to provide opportunities for students to dive deep into various aspects of musical studies. PVYO Summer Classes are taught by our very own ensemble conductors. All PVYO Conductors are veteran music teachers with many years of experience in the classroom and on the podium. This is a wonderful opportunity for your child to expand their musical understanding and broaden their understanding. Students may enroll in multiple sessions. Each Session is $120.00. All classes are taught online through ZOOM.

Audition Preparation Workshop

Instructor : Robert Dahlin

Curriculum:

This workshop will go over how to prepare for and perform the best audition possible. We will address recorded auditions as well as live auditions. We will discuss video issues, audio issues, microphones, and microphone set up. We will also address how to practice being nervous and learning how to channel nervous energy. Of course, covering scales and sight-reading. We will go over typical judging rubrics to see what judges are looking for. The students will submit short videos for examination. Strongly recommend smart music for sight reading practice.

Chamber Music – Brass Intensive

Instructor: Terry Alvey

In this class, PVYO Wind Ensemble Director, and Trumpet player, Terry Alvey, introduces and leads brass students through some of the great Brass Chamber Music Literature. Students will learn and reinforce good brass warm-up techniques, listen and analyze specific Brass chamber pieces, and practice and perform online. This is a wonderful way to work with an accomplished brass teacher, learn new repertoire, and enhance your skills.

Violin/Viola Bow Arm Class

Instructor: Dr. Mark Schuppener

Curriculum:

In this class, PVYO Preparatory Orchestra Director, Dr. Mark Schuppener, leads students through an intensive workshop focused on developing expressive, relaxed, and efficient bow arm technique. This workshop is specially designed to address the needs in bow technique and bow arm development we see in many string students coming through the PVYO program. This is a great way to learn and develop your technique in a fun, encouraging, and productive online environment.

Electronic Music Production

Instructor: Michelle Roberts
  • Date: Thursdays: 1/14, 1/21, 1/28, 2/4
  • Time: 7:00 – 8:00 p.m.

Curriculum:

Taught by PVYO Symphony Co-Conductor and Montgomery Blair HS Music Technology Teacher, Michelle Roberts, this course will teach students the techniques and principles of electronic music production that they will apply to their own compositions. Geared toward MS/HS students.

Topics may include:

  • Recording and Sequencing
  • Creating Loops and Patterns
  • Remixing, Arranging, and Composing
  • Setting Up an In-Home Studio

**Students must have access to the browser-based Digital Audio Workstation Soundtrap. This is available for free, but it is recommended that students use the Music Makers Premium version. This is available for a free 30-day trial!
