Job Title: Assistant to Preparatory Orchestra Conductor

Reports to: Preparatory Orchestra Conductor

Primary Purpose: Help the conductor enhance the musical instruction and development of the ensemble. Specific duties include:

– Regularly coaching sectionals within the rehearsal framework, as well as pullouts as needed
– Walking around the ensemble to maintain a constructive, educational environment
– Conducting the full ensemble as needed during rehearsals to allow the conductor to observe the ensemble
– Marking score for errors when not otherwise engaged
– Assisting with seating auditions
– Listening to any virtually submitted playing requests as needed
– Assisting with communications among the principal conductor, ensemble manager, and students on specific rehearsal issues
– Assisting with setting up and tearing down the rehearsal room as needed
– Filling in for missing instrumentation if needed

Duty Schedule: 12 weekly rehearsals per semester on Tuesday evenings, approximately every second week, plus two concerts per year (typically May and December). Willingness to communicate during the week with the principal conductor. Must have own transportation.

Educational Qualifications/Certification: Bachelor’s degree in music from an accredited college or university preferred. Strong candidates enrolled in an ongoing music degree program would be considered.

Special Knowledge/Skills: Knowledge of string instrumental techniques; Musical coaching skills and knowledge of rehearsal techniques specific to the age level; Conducting skills; Ability to work well with young musicians of varying backgrounds; Ability to work well with adults, both peers, and supervisors.

Compensation: This is an annual contract position. Pay commensurate with experience.

PVYO is proud to offer online summer classes to provide opportunities for students to dive deep into various aspects of musical studies.  PVYO Summer Classes are taught by our very own ensemble conductors.  All PVYO Conductors are veteran music teachers with many years of experience in the classroom and on the podium.  This is a wonderful opportunity for your child to expand their musical understanding and broaden their understanding.

Students may enroll in multiple sessions. Each Session is $120.00. All classes online through ZOOM.

Announcing the 2021 Winter Institute!

PVYO is proud to offer our new PVYO Mid-Winter Online Music Institute to supplement the ensemble instruction students are receiving in PVYO, school, or in other orchestras and bands.  Classes are designed to provide engaging study and training, allowing students to explore the many facets of musical expression and creativity. This is a great way to investigate different topics in music that can benefit the growing individual and musician.

Classes will be held for four (4) weeks during the PVYO mid-winter break.
